Round 7 Thrilling First Win v Cheltenham

Our First win for the year was at a home game against our local rivals: Cheltenham Black.

Weather:  It was kind to us :  14 degrees, no rain and little wind, muddy centre square from previous 2 days down pour.

Captains for the day were Jacob Edwards and Matthew Edwards (not brothers or cousins).

Jacob & Matt

First Quarter

Lochie Leason kicked it out of the centre mud.

We scored early in the piece with several points scored by Max Heath, Nate Dear, Mitchell Morison and Matthew Edwards. All legends in their own right.

Great marks taken by Daniel Hutton (yet to capture one on camera - sorry Daniel - Cherie)  & Thomas Bray.

Fantastic smother by Nate Dear.
Two consecutive taps out of the centre by Jacob Edwards.

Tom saved a goal with a brave smother.

Coach Darin’s  Quarter time “Rev Up”.
Bend over and pick up the ball. Get the ball and run straight to the goals.”

Shark Attack

Second Quarter
Hunter got out in front and marked a beauty.  Ace scored a behind.  Great handball from Lachy Morison despite an opposition player hanging onto his jumper for dear life.

At half time Darin got the boys into the room and inspired them to be more competitive for the ball.  "Fire up and go get it Sharks".  The boys tried the upside down, legs up move to reinvigorate them!

Hunter, Thomas, Ace, Sam & Charlie

Third Quarter

Max took another great mark (reminds one un-named old timer of Peter Moore in his day ). Clark did a great job involving himself in the play taking a run and a bounce and assisting his team mates.

Fitzy fell on his injured knee which he had twisted in soccer but returned to assist, and was back in action.  Jacob great run and kick, Thomas Bray great mark!

Ace Brodie was on fire and scored the first goal, after a heart stopping behind earlier in the game.  It was great to see his team mates patting him on the back and celebrating with him.

Nate on the run

Matt gets "Nate-er-ated"

Great to see the boys celebrate the first goal courtesy of Ace

Darin encourages the boys to get the ball & run with it

Fired up & ready for the fourth quarter

Fourth Quarter

The tension started building and you could hear the squeals from the parents (present company excluded!)
Max Heath great kick to Jacob Edwards who kicked to Lochie Leason who kicked it to Ace. Ace kicked to Mitch Morison who kicked it through the goals but tragically it was touched by a Panther. Max Heath took the mark of the match. Sam, Henry and Angus all involved themselves in the game and showed real improvement.

Nate continued to show his toughness getting in and getting the ball only to be rewarded with a point. Lachy Morison kicked a fantastic goal which became the sealer. Matt showed his class again and kicked the final nail in the Panther Coffin (despite being "Nate-erated" in an earlier collision with Nate).

Across the board the boys really lifted in the last quarter, they listened to Darin's instructions to get the ball and run with it.  Not disheartened with near misses at goal, each kick in after a behind seemed to just be another opportunity for the Sharks to have another shot. It was a genuine team effort to post their first win.
The challenge next week - to play like they did in the third and fourth quarters for the first half too!

Many thanks to all the Coaches and all thewanna be coaches: the deadest fantastic parents!

Coaches Awards
Matt Edwards and Mitch Morison

Mitch & Matt

Matt and Mitch were worthy recipients of the award - both contributed during the whole game.  Both show great skills and courage and love to go for a run with the ball.

A BIG THANKYOU also to Charlie (Chompers) Moller (brother of Angus) who played with the Hounds for the first time to help us out!

Sharks Win First Game in Thriller at Shark Park

The Sharks came from behind today and posted their first win for the season.  Trailing all day after kicking a plethora of behinds the Sharks smelt the scent of victory in the last quarter and went in for the kill!  In a real team effort they were desperate and fought hard continuing to push the ball forward and  peppering the goals - adding 2 goals 5 behinds to the score in the last quarter.

Coach's Award recipients Matt Edwards and Mitchell Morison both kicked goals in the last quarter putting the Sharks in front and making it very difficult for the other team to catch up.  Nervous Sharks supporters waited desperately for the siren to sound while the Sharks held the lead and when it did the pressure valve was released!!!  Several parents (no names mentioned) can now reduce the dosage on their recently prescribed blood pressure tablets.
When "Softy" came out of the change rooms double bibbed and ready to run in the next game - he seemed stunned by the change in the Sharks fortunes!  Obviously when the pressure's on in future games we need to leave (big) Fitzy in charge!  Well done Sharks on a hard fought first win.
GO SHARKS!!!!

Sharks hit the front

Did that really happen????

Happy about reducing their prescription medication this week???

How on earth did that happen???

Shaking hands

Getting ready to sing the song

Thomas Bray Wins Shark of the Month (April)

Thomas Bray won our first Shark of the Month in April.  Darin praised Thomas for being very courageous in the first games of the season and for being a great team player.  He also says he has a great left foot.  Well done Thomas - keep going in for the ball and doing your best in every game.

Tough Round 6 game v East Malvern

First Quarter
Brrr what a frosty start to the match for all.  Captains Will Roworth and Daniel Hutton lead the team out onto the ground with great gusto! We had a good clearance from the centre from Ace Brodie and good kick out to Max Heath and on to Lachlan Morrison.  A great mark was taken by Captain Will Roworth.  East Malvern were strong from the start with 4 goals, 3 points kicked by the opposition in this first quarter.

At quarter time Coach Darin said to Max Heath, "It’s the best ¼ I have  seen you play" and commended Will for "awesome playing on".  He encouraged the team to "keep running until you hear the whistle, run and fight for the footy....we have to be more competitive on the ground."

Second Quarter
Matthew Edwards had a good kick out to Nate and the boys were working hard to defend when they were in the forward pocket.  Thomas Bray and Lachlan Morison fought hard for the ball.    Sam Gough chased hard.  Beautiful mark taken by Max Heath and strong kick towards centre, however again the ball headed towards the opposition’s goal.

At half time the boys were told to “Look, Listen and Concentrate. We need to commit to the ball!” Special mention to Max, Nate, Matty, Lachy and Mitch for their commitment. Lollies used as half time incentive, maybe a bit of sugar could be just what the boys needed!!!!!!!!

Eyes on me

Third Quarter

Angus Moller made a great attempt to move the ball out of the centre. Callum kicked to Thomas B and on to Mitchell who was tackled to the ground. Good effort by Max, on the ball and fighting for it all game.  Nate’s job at this stage was to stand front on to block and defend.

Lochie Leason and Nate despite being so focused on the ball that they ran into each other, moved it forward.  A big kick by Fitzy in the direction of our goal but to no avail!

Pep talk
“Henry and Callum stay on the footy, Fitzy follow the ball you are in the ruck, Nate big long kicks in.  Try to get the footy and run, run, run, run the quarter out and come off puffed! Fitzy, Ace chase that footy.  Be Competitive for the ball everyone.”

Fourth Quarter
The fourth quarter begins with Beauy Hound Sharks ready to go.  All boys in position.  Ace, Fitzy and Callum ready for the bounce. Meanwhile Coach Darin and Assistant Coach Fitzy had a lolly fix  (I think we all needed one!)

Fitzy gets the ball and survived the tackle. Huge kick by Callum into the pack, the boys are showing more commitment and passion for the ball.

During this quarter there was a
Tactical Team Meeting held at the other end of the ground with several members of both teams!! (makes you wonder what they were discussing??)

Will and Daniel pursue the ball and chase it towards Lachlan and Mitchell who try hard to run it down with Ace, but to no avail.

Morison boys on the run....looking out for one another
Siren sounds, it’s a clear win to East Malvern however determination and commitment to the ball and each other saw our boys have a more competitive last half.
GO SHARKS

Matt continued to demonstrate great skills

Brave in defence

Thomas..... under pressure

Sharks getting more desperate for the ball

Daniel Sutton took a great grab but unfortunately it wasn't captured by camera or video!
Singing the song again...a win cant be too far away

Coach's Awards to Max Heath & Will Roworth who played a Captain's game - trying all day against well drilled opposition.  Got plenty of action himself or wasn't far away from it.
Max continued to have his best game yet after Darin's comments at Quarter time that it was the best quarter he'd seen Max play. He took some great marks and continued to be competitive all day.

Great mark Max
